This super easy handmade hat of leaf is great for winter and autumn wear and looks great on kids and adults alike. So today I’ll give you instructions for an easy understanding on how to make this beautiful leaf knit hat for winter.

Materials

Circular needles size 4 (3.5mm) & 6 (4mm) 24″ cable
Brown wool yarn, 1 ball; 5oz


Size

Instructions are written in smaller size, larger in parentheses. When only 1 number is given, it applies to both sizes.
– adult’s small/medium (medium/large).


Circumference

16 (19 1/4) inches, stretches to 18 – 20 (20 – 22) inches.


Gauge

Leaf pattern with size 6 needles: 18 sts and 28 rows = 4″.


Abbreviations

k = knit
p = purl
st = stitch
CO = cast on
sl = slip the next stitch
PSSO = pass slipped stitch over
K2tog = knit two stitches together
SK2P = slip stitch, knit next two stitches together, pass slip stitch over

Instructions

With size 4, CO 108 (120) sts
Row 1 – 10: *P1, K1; rep from * around

Leaf Pattern in Rounds (for this hat) in multiples of 12 sts.

Row 1: *P1, K1, P1, K2tog, YO, K1, YO, SSK, [P1, K1] twice; rep from * around.
Row 2: *P1, K1, P1, K5, [P1, K1] twice; rep from * around.
Row 3: *P1, K1, K2tog, [K1, YO] twice, K1, SSK, K1, P1, K1; rep from * around.
Row 4: *P1, K9, P1, K1; rep from * around.
Row 5: *P1, K2tog, K2, YO, K1, YO, K2, SSK, P1, K1; rep from * around.
Row 6: *P1, K9, P1, K1; rep from * around.
Row 7: *YO, SSK, K7, K2tog, YO, K1; rep from * around.
Row 8, 10 and 12: Knit.
Row 9: *YO, K1, SSK, K5, K2tog, K1, YO, K1; rep from * around.
Row 11: *YO, K2, SSK, K3, K2tog, K2, YO, K1; rep from * around.
Row 13: *YO, K4, SK2P, K4, YO, K1; rep from * around.
Row 14: Knit
Row 15: *K3, K2tog, YO, K1, YO, SSK, K4; rep from * around.
Row 16 and all even rows: Knit
Row 17: *K2, K2tog, [K1, YO] twice, K1, SSK, K3; rep from * around.
Row 19: *K1, K2tog, K2, YO, K1, YO, K2, SSK, K2; rep from * around.
Row 21: *YO, SSK, K7, K2tog, YO, K1; rep from * around.
Row 23: *YO, K1, SSK, K5, K2tog, K1, YO, K1; rep from * around.
Row 25: *YO, K2, SSK, K3, K2tog, K2, YO, K1; rep from * around.
Row 27: *YO, K4, SK2P, K4, YO, K1; rep from * around.
Row 28: Knit.
Repeat Rows 15 through 28 one more time.
TIP: for a less “slouchy” leaf knit hat, don’t repeat Rows 15 through 28 and continue with the crown shaping.


Shaping Crown

Switch to double-pointed or circular needles when needed.
Row 1: Knit.
Row 2: *K4, SK2P, K5; rep from * around. – 90 (100) sts
Rows 3 & 4: Knit.
Row 5: *K3, SK2P, K4; rep from * around. – 72 (80) sts
Rows 6 & 7: Knit.
Row 8: *K2, SK2P, K3; rep from * around. – 54 (60) sts
Rows 9 & 10: Knit.
Row 11: *K1, SK2P, K2; rep from * around. – 36 (40) sts
Rows 12 & 13: Knit.
Row 14: * SK2P, K1; rep from * around. – 18 (20) sts
Rows 15 & 16: Knit.
Row 17: [SSK] 9 (10) times. – 9 (12) sts
Row 18: Knit.
Row 19: K1 (0), [ssk] 4 (6) times. – 5 (6) sts
Cut the yarn, sew up top of your hat and remaining threads and enjoy.


To Knit Leaf Pattern Flat (not in the round)

Cast on multiples of 12 sts + 1
Row 1 (right side): K1, *K3, K2tog, YO, K1, YO, SSK, K4; rep from * to end.
Row 2 and all wrong side rows: Purl.
Row 3: K1, *K2, K2tog, [k1, YO] twice, K1, SSK, K3; rep from * to end.
Row 5: K1, *K1, K2tog, K2, YO, K1, YO, K2, SSK, K2; rep from * to end.
Row 7: K1, *YO, SSK, K7, K2tog, YO, K1; rep from * to end.
Row 9: K1, *YO, K1, SSK, K5, K2tog, K1, YO, K1; rep from * to end.
Row 11: K1, *YO, K2, SSK, K3, K2tog, K2, YO, K1, rep from * to end.
Row 13: K1, *YO, K4, YO, K1; rep from * to end.
Row 14: Purl.
Repeat Rows 1 through 14 to form pattern.
